Question sent
to Annie & Stephanie~
Q )
I am dating a wonderful and charming man and I'm enjoying our dates, however
he has a dog and since he lives on his boat he chooses to bring the dog
in the car with him on our dates. The first 2 dates I met him, and last
night when he picked me up the dog was in the car. Now you may think that
this is not a big deal, however I am not a dog person, nor do I want any
responsibility where an animal is concerned. I had dogs when my kids were
little...that was a different time. He is already planning activities
for us to do. How do I handle this? If it developed into a serious relationship
I wouldn't want to put him in the position to choose.. I'd probably loose.
-- H
A ) If you build a life with this man the dog will be
a part of it. As part of dating, he has an opportunity to express how
he will care for you with regard to the dog as with all other things.
In order for this man to know what you need you must find
non-threatening, non-offensive way of telling him your needs regarding
the dog, and all other things. The purpose of courtship
is to determine if you are able and willing to meet each other's needs
and form a long term bond.
The question always comes back to, 'Which of the five stages of dating
are you in?' You, H, are in stage 2: Uncertainty. Being uncertain does
not mean it is time to stop dating him. It simply means that you not date
him exclusively, or let him near your squishy parts, or fall in love until
you have enough information.
How a person treats an animal is a good way to see how they'll treat other
'things' they care for. Never make it a question of 'choosing.' Put the
responsibility on him to please you and care for you. He will pick up
the ball, or he wont. If he doesn't, then you move on. Don't worry about
him and how he'll react later if you've spent time together and then have
to end it because of the dog. For now, the most important thing you said
was, 'I'm enjoying our dates.' Keeping enjoying yourself.
About
Love and Conflict:
"Daddy!
Daddy! I want an EverLastingGobStopper and I want it NOW!!" the
pretty little girl demanded. In
a scene from Willie Wonka & The Chocolate Factory we are presented
with the unattractive image of a little girl demanding what she wants.
Demanding, in fact, immediate satisfaction. We are uncomfortable with
the image, particularly from a girl child because little girls are taught
to "be desirable, not to desire" as we are told by Dr. Gray
in his seminar on men, women and communication. more..
